Right of asylum
Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 states: “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.” This passage forms the basis of the UN 1951 Refugee Convention, which has in the meantime been signed by more than 140 countries, including Switzerland, Great Britain, all the EU member states, and the USA. Incorporation of this right into asylum legislation in the individual countries is subject to various interpretations of who counts as a refugee and which circumstances are assessed as a protection-related reason for fleeing. The recognition of poverty and the effects of climate change, in particular, as a reason for fleeing remain objects of political negotiation. While Amsterdam invokes Anne Frank in numerous places, the refugees Kitty meets in the city are threatened with deportation. Kitty tries to resolve this contradiction.
